I’m a ball of emotions, more than usual, and I know Darius is worried about how I’ll react by the way he’s glancing at me in the rear-view mirror. Going from no blood family to finding my father and brother really started pushing me over the edge, but now we were off to save a sister, too? I really need a fucking drink.

I sit in the back with Pepe, thinking it will give me some time to brood on everything, but Pepe seems adamant to pull me out of my own head for some reason after being on the road for a while. I guess my pet likes me after all. He doesn’t really know what’s going on with my family, but he must sense my inner turmoil.

“I’ll pray for her,” he says firmly, closing his eyes and whispering words under his breath in the quiet car, asking Jesus to look out for my sister and bring her home to me. I want to tease him for it, because I’m not a believer in prayers being answered, but the fact that he wants to, makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

“Thanks,” I mumble, surprising Darius with my grown-up approach. He’s expecting me to make jokes.

Pepe finishes his prayer and looks over at me with a smile. “It’s obvious you care about her.”

“I don’t even fucking know her,” I grunt, but he shrugs casually.

“So? She’s still your family. I think it’s good you’re going to help her. Will you bring her back with you and get to know her?” Good fucking question.

I have no idea what to do when I find her, but a part of me wants to have her in my life. Papi is one thing, but Loqi and Cara are another. They didn’t know I existed, so I can’t exactly hold a grudge against them. Doesn’t mean I’m ready to face the reality that I have a family yet.

“She might hate me. Or run home to Papi Loco. I can’t be around him right now. I just can’t,” I admit, chewing on my bottom lip in thought. If she’s a nice girl with a different upbringing, she might be terrified of the man I’ve become. If it was anyone else I wouldn’t give a shit about their thoughts about me, but the thought of my own sister despising me? It’s starting to eat away at me like a flesh-eating poison.

“C’mon, who wouldn’t like you and your murderous antics and scary bomb skills?” he laughs dryly, making me snort.

“Normal people?”

“I have a feeling if she shares the same blood as you, she will be anything but normal. Try not to think about it until we get there. Let’s play I Spy,” he suggests, making Zander scoff from the front passenger seat. His eyes are closed as he tries to nap, but he never misses anything.

“It’s dark out.”

“So? I spy with my little eye, something beginning with A,” Pepe continues, not giving a shit when Zander growls about us being children. I grin, loving the idea of playing some games to pass the time, especially if it annoys Zander.
